How to Play Bridges (Hashi)
Bridges is a logic puzzle from Japan, where it's called Hashiwokakero ("build bridges"), often shortened to Hashi. The grid is a sea with numbered islands. Your job is to join them all up.
The rules
- Bridges run straight, across or down, between two islands, with only water in between.
- Two islands can have one or two bridges between them.
- Bridges can't cross each other.
- Each island's number is the total of bridges touching it.
- In the end, all the islands must form one connected group.
Every puzzle on kawu has exactly one solution, and you can reach it by logic alone.
Playing on kawu
- Tap an island, then a neighbouring island in the same row or column, to build a bridge. Tap the pair again for a second bridge, and once more to take both away.
- Or drag from one island to the other.
- With a keyboard, focus an island and press an arrow key to build towards the next island that way.
- An island with all its bridges turns dark. One with too many gets a red dashed ring.
- Hints show the next bridge to build, or one to take away. Undo takes back a step.
Frequently asked questions
Can bridges cross in Hashi?
No. Bridges can't cross each other, and they can't pass over an island. They run straight across or down from one island to the next one in line.
How many bridges can two islands share?
One or two. Never three or more.
