Euchre Strategy: 9 Tips to Win More Hands
These tips are for players who know the rules and the bowers. Euchre rewards partnership and position as much as good cards.
1. Count your likely tricks before you bid
Count roughly:
- Right Bower: almost always a trick.
- Left Bower: nearly always a trick.
- Trump Ace: often a trick.
- Off-suit Ace: often a trick, if it isn't trumped.
- A void in another suit adds a trick or so if you have trumps to ruff with.
If your hand looks like two tricks, your partner usually adds one. Three is enough to make trump.
2. Mind where the upcard goes
Ordering up gives the upcard to the dealer:
- If the dealer is your partner, the upcard helps your team. Order up a little more freely, especially if it's a bower or the Ace.
- If the dealer is an opponent, you hand them a trump. You need a stronger hand to order up.
- If you are the dealer, count the upcard as yours and plan your discard.
3. As dealer, discard to create a void
When you pick up, throw away a low card in a suit where it's your only card. With no cards in that suit, you can trump the first time it's led.
4. Round two: think about the "next" suit
When the upcard is turned down, the suit of the same colour is often a good call for the player to the dealer's left. The dealer showed no interest in that colour, and the two bowers are still out. Sitting next to the dealer, many players call "next" with two trumps and an Ace.
5. Lead trump when your team made it
If you or your partner chose trump and you hold the Right Bower, lead it. Drawing the opponents' trumps protects your partner's off-suit Aces. When your partner made trump, a trump lead helps them too.
6. Defend with off-suit Aces
When the opponents made trump, lead an off-suit Ace or a card from a short suit. Leading trump into the makers usually helps them.
7. Don't overtake your partner
If your partner is already winning a trick, play your lowest card, even when you could win with a higher one. Overtaking wastes a winner you'll need later. The kawu computer partner follows this rule too.
8. Win as cheaply as you can
When an opponent is winning, beat them with the smallest card that wins. Trump with your lowest trump, and save the bowers.
9. Know when to go alone
Go alone when your hand wins five tricks almost no matter where the other cards are: both bowers plus the trump Ace and two more strong cards, for example. See going alone for more examples and the scoring.
Playing on kawu
- Easy computers call too often or too rarely and sometimes play a random card.
- Normal computers use the tips on this page.
- Hard computers simulate many possible deals of the cards they can't see before bidding and before each card.

Frequently asked questions
How many trumps do I need to order up?
As a rough guide, three trumps including a bower, or two trumps plus an off-suit Ace. Be more careful when ordering up to an opposing dealer, because the upcard goes into their hand.
Should I lead trump?
Lead trump when you or your partner made it and you hold strong trumps; it pulls the opponents' trumps. When the opponents made it, lead an off-suit Ace or a short suit instead.
Should I trump my partner's Ace?
No. If your partner is already winning the trick, play your lowest card and save your trumps.
