Huarong Dao Strategy: 6 Tips

1. Keep the two gaps together

A 2-wide block (Cao Cao or a lying general) can only move into two empty cells side by side; a 2-tall block needs them stacked. Two gaps far apart can only move soldiers. Most good positions have the gaps next to each other.

2. Soldiers are your helpers

Soldiers fit anywhere. Use them to fill the holes you don't need and to open the ones you do. Park them in corners when they're in the way.

3. Work out where Cao Cao must pass

Cao Cao needs a 2-wide lane to come down through. Look at which blocks sit in that lane and plan how each one gets out of it.

4. The lying general is usually the key

A horizontal general can only drop down or rise up when two cells under or above it are free. Getting it to one side is often the whole puzzle.

5. Don't undo progress

If a block went somewhere useful, try not to move it back. A solution that keeps undoing itself goes round in circles.

6. Compare with the best

Each level shows its fewest moves. Solve it any way first, then try again to get closer to the best.

Frequently asked questions

What's the hardest part of Huarong Dao?

Getting the horizontal general (Guan Yu) out of Cao Cao's way. In the classic opening he sits right under Cao Cao, and most of the 81 moves go into moving him aside.
