How to Play Word Guess
Word Guess is a quick word puzzle: work out a hidden five-letter English word in six guesses.
How a turn works
- Type any real five-letter word and press Enter.
- Each letter of your guess is marked:
| Tile | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Green with ● | The letter is in the word, in this exact spot. |
| Gold with ○ | The letter is in the word, but somewhere else. |
| Grey | The letter isn't in the word (or not that many times). |
- Use what you've learned for the next guess. The keyboard below shows the best mark each letter has had.
Find the word within six guesses to win.
Repeated letters
Marks count letters properly. Say the answer is ELDER and you guess EERIE: the first E is green, the second E is gold (there's another E in ELDER), the R is gold, and the last E is grey because ELDER has only two Es.
Hard mode
In hard mode every guess must use what you've found: green letters stay where they are, and gold letters must appear somewhere.
The daily word and practice
- The daily word is the same for everyone and changes at midnight on your device.
- Practice gives a new random word whenever you start a new game.
- Copy result copies your coloured grid (no letters), so you can share it without spoilers.
Hints
The hint doesn't know the answer either. It looks at every word that fits your marks and suggests the guess that narrows them down the most.
The word lists
Answers are common English words. Many more real words are accepted as guesses. The lists come from the public-domain ENABLE list and from SCOWL by Kevin Atkinson (see our credits).
Frequently asked questions
Can a letter appear twice in the answer?
Yes. If you guess a letter twice and the answer has it once, only one of them is marked; if the answer has it twice, both are.
Is the daily word the same for everyone?
Yes. Everyone gets the same daily word, so you can compare results with friends. Practice words are random and unlimited.
