Word Search Strategy: 7 Tips

1. Hunt for rare letters

If a word has a Q, Z, X, J, K or V, find those letters first. There are only a few of them in the grid.

2. Look for letter pairs

Instead of one letter, look for the first two letters next to each other. The pair narrows it down fast.

3. Sweep row by row

For a stubborn word, run your eyes along every row, then every column, looking for its first letter.

4. Don't forget diagonals and backwards

On medium and large grids words also run diagonally, and on large they can run backwards. Searching for the last letters reversed often helps.

5. Long words first

Long words are easier to spot and use up lots of letters, which makes the rest of the grid quieter.

6. Double letters

Words with double letters (like BALLOON or COFFEE) show up as a pair of the same letter, which is easy to see.

7. Use the hint as a last resort

The hint only shows a first letter, so you still have to find the direction.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to solve a word search?

Look for an unusual letter in the word (like Q, Z, X, J, K or V), find that letter in the grid, and check around it. Rare letters stand out much faster than common ones.
