Amazons Strategy: 5 Tips
Amazons is a race for space. Rules first? See how to play.
1. Territory, not threats
There are no captures, so think about which squares will end up yours. A square only you can reach is a move in the bank.
2. Keep four amazons alive
An amazon sealed into a small pocket has few moves left. Spread yours into open areas early and avoid corners that the opponent can wall off.
3. Trap when you can
Conversely, an enemy amazon in a corner or near the edge can sometimes be shut in with two or three arrows. A trapped amazon is worth far more than a few squares elsewhere.
4. Burn where it hurts
Place arrows on squares your opponent needs: exits from their regions, bridges between areas, squares that would open a wall.
5. Count the endgame
When the regions are sealed, count empty squares in each: yours against theirs. If you are ahead, simplify; if behind, look for a wall you can still break through.
The hard computer evaluates every move by territory (squares it reaches before you do) and checks the best candidates against your strongest reply late in the game; normal counts mobility; easy plays at random.
Frequently asked questions
What should I think about in the Game of the Amazons?
Territory. Once the board breaks into separate regions, each side can only make as many moves as there are empty squares in its own regions. The player with more squares makes the last move and wins.
