Banqi Strategy: 5 Tips

Banqi mixes luck with real calculation. Rules first? See how to play.

1. Flip where you are strong

A flipped piece is as likely to be the enemy's as yours. Flip beside your own strong pieces, where an enemy appearing can be captured next turn, and away from the enemy's.

2. Keep a soldier near the general

Your soldiers are the only pieces that can take the enemy general. Keep one safe and mobile for when the general shows.

3. The cannon needs a screen

A cannon captures over exactly one piece. Face-down pieces make excellent screens, so a cannon behind a hidden piece threatens whatever appears beyond it.

4. Do not chase with the general

The general captures almost everything, but any soldier can take it, and face-down pieces may hide one. Use it to control, not to wander.

5. Count the hidden pieces

Each side has one general, two each of the others and five soldiers. Track what has appeared to judge the odds of each flip and how many threats remain.

The hard computer values material and threats and checks the opponent's best known reply; normal evaluates one move; easy plays at random.

Frequently asked questions

When should I flip rather than move?

Flip when nothing of yours is in danger and no capture is available, and flip next to your own high pieces, so that whatever appears can be dealt with at once. Avoid flipping beside an enemy general or chariot.
