How to play
- White moves first; players take turns, one move each.
- Each piece moves its own way: rooks in straight lines, bishops diagonally, the queen both, knights in an L, the king one square.
- Pawns move forward and capture diagonally; one that reaches the far side becomes a queen (or another piece).
- Put the enemy king in check with no way out (checkmate) to win.
- No legal move but not in check is stalemate, a draw. So are repeated positions and fifty moves without a capture or pawn move.
