Chess Openings for Beginners

An opening is a known sequence of first moves. You don't need to memorise long lines; learn what each opening is trying to do. All of these are played by our computer, which picks among them at random.

Openings with 1. e4

Italian Game

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4. The bishop aims at f7, Black's weakest square. White plans c3 and d4, and castles quickly. The most natural opening for beginners.

The Italian Game after 3. Bc4.

Ruy Lopez (Spanish)

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5. The bishop pressures the knight that defends e5. Slower than the Italian, and a favourite of world champions for centuries.

The Ruy Lopez after 3. Bb5.

Sicilian Defence

1. e4 c5. Black fights for d4 from the side and gets an unbalanced game. The most popular reply to 1. e4 at the top level, full of sharp lines.

The Sicilian Defence.

French Defence

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5. Black builds a solid chain of pawns and challenges e4. The light-squared bishop is often shut in; Black counterattacks with ...c5.

The French Defence.

Caro-Kann Defence

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5. Like the French, but the c-pawn supports d5, so the bishop can come out to f5 first. Very solid.

The Caro-Kann Defence.

Openings with 1. d4

Queen's Gambit

1. d4 d5 2. c4. White offers the c-pawn to pull Black's d-pawn away from the centre. It isn't a real sacrifice: if Black takes, White usually wins the pawn back.

The Queen's Gambit.

London System

1. d4, 2. Nf3, 3. Bf4, then e3, c3 and Bd3. White sets up the same way against almost anything. Easy to learn, and it develops naturally.

The London System.

King's Indian Defence

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6. Black lets White take the centre, castles, and attacks it later with ...e5 or ...c5. For players who like counterattacks.

The King's Indian Defence.

Other first moves

English Opening

1. c4. White controls d5 from the side and often plays g3 and Bg2. Flexible; it can turn into many other openings.

The English Opening.

A trap to know: Scholar's Mate

1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 Nc6 3. Qh5 Nf6?? 4. Qxf7#. Queen and bishop both hit f7. Defend with 3... g6 or 3... Qe7, and White's early queen just becomes a target.

Scholar's Mate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best chess opening for beginners?

For White, the Italian Game (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4) or the London System (1. d4, 2. Nf3, 3. Bf4). Both follow the basic principles: centre, development, castling. For Black, meet 1. e4 with 1... e5 and 1. d4 with 1... d5.

Do I need to memorise chess openings?

Not at first. Learn the ideas (centre pawns, develop knights and bishops, castle) and a few moves of one or two openings. Understanding why the moves are played matters more than long memorised lines.
