How to Play Code Breaker

Code Breaker is the classic code-guessing game with coloured pegs.

The rules

  1. A secret code of colours is hidden: 4 slots from 6 colours on the first two levels, 5 slots from 8 colours on the hard level.
  2. Enter a guess and press Check. You get:
    • a black peg for every colour in the right slot;
    • a white peg for every colour that's in the code but in a different slot.
  3. The pegs aren't in slot order: they only say how many.
  4. Crack the code within the limit (10 guesses, 12 on hard).

Repeats

On the first level the code has no repeated colours (and your guesses can't either). On the others, a colour may appear more than once; each code colour pairs with at most one guess colour.

Frequently asked questions

What do the black and white pegs mean?

A black peg: one of your colours is in the right slot. A white peg: one of your colours is in the code, but in a different slot. The pegs are not in slot order.

How are repeated colours counted?

Each colour in the code is matched to at most one in your guess. If the code has one red and you guessed two, only one of them gets a peg.
