Dou Dizhu Strategy: 8 Tips to Win More Games
Dou Dizhu has luck in the deal, but good players win far more often. Here are eight habits that make the biggest difference. If you're new, read the rules and the combinations guide first.
1. Count your plays before you bid
Sort your hand into the fewest plays that would empty it. If that number is small, around six or fewer, and you have control cards (jokers, 2s, bombs), bid. If your hand needs many plays and has few high cards, you're better off as a peasant.
2. Sort your hand into long combinations
A straight 3 4 5 6 7 is one play instead of five. Look for straights, pair chains and planes first, then triples with kickers, and only then pairs and singles. Don't break a straight to make one extra pair.
3. Lead small, keep control
When you lead, play your lowest and most awkward cards first: small singles and small pairs. Keep 2s, jokers and bombs to win back the lead later. With the lead in hand at the end, you can play everything out.
4. Lead long combinations
Opponents rarely hold a matching straight or plane of the same length that's higher. Playing long combinations early saves several plays and often goes unanswered.
5. Play as a team when you're a peasant
- Don't beat your partner unless you need to.
- When the landlord leads, the player right after the landlord should try to beat it, so the landlord can't dump small cards.
- When you lead and your partner is nearly out, lead something they can easily follow.
6. Watch for "1 card left" and "2 cards left"
When an opponent has one card left, don't lead a low single. Lead a pair or another combination, or your highest single if you must. With two cards left, be careful with low pairs.
7. Don't waste bombs
A bomb doubles the points and might be beaten by a bigger bomb. Good times to use one: an opponent is about to go out, or the bomb gives you the lead to play out the rest of your hand.
8. Track the big cards
At least remember the two jokers, the four 2s and any bombs already played. If no higher card is left, your "highest" card really is safe to play.
Practise on kawu
Play a few games against Normal and use Hint to see your options. Then try Hard: it guesses the unseen hands from the cards played, simulates the rest of the game many times, and picks the play that wins most often. You can also play the Chinese version.
Frequently asked questions
When should I bid to be the landlord?
When your hand has jokers, 2s or a bomb, and can be played out in few plays (say six or fewer). If you have lots of scattered low cards and one big card, let someone else be the landlord.
Should a peasant beat the other peasant's cards?
Usually not. Let your partner keep the lead. Save your strong cards for beating the landlord.
