Durak Strategy: 6 Tips

Durak is about trumps: who has them, who's forced to spend them, and who still holds them when the deck runs out. New here? Read the rules first.

1. Trumps are for the end

While the deck lasts, a high trump beats one card and is gone. In the endgame the same trump can't be beaten by anything but a bigger trump. Keep them.

2. Attack with pairs

Leading a rank you hold twice lets you throw in the second card after the defence. Two attacks for one decision, and twice the chance of forcing a trump.

3. Lead low

Attack with your lowest non-trump cards first. They're the cards you'd be stuck with anyway, and they cost the defender a real card every time.

4. Take early, not late

Taking a couple of low cards while the deck is full costs almost nothing; you draw back to six anyway. Burning a trump to avoid it is the real loss.

5. Count from the discard

Every discarded bout is information. Once the deck is nearly gone you can work out which trumps are still out, and whether your attack can be beaten at all.

6. In the endgame, go out on your own attack

With the deck empty, time your last cards so that you attack with your final card and it's beaten or taken; either way you're out, and your opponent is the durak.

Frequently asked questions

Should I ever take instead of beating?

Yes, early in the game, when beating would cost you a high trump for one small card. Taking two or three low cards is cheap while the deck still refills your hand; losing the ace of trumps is not.
