Four in a Row Strategy: 8 Tips to Win
Four in a Row looks simple, but good players plan several moves ahead. New to the game? Read the rules.
1. Start in the centre
The middle column is part of the most lines. Control it and you have more chances to make four.
2. Block threes at once
Before every move, look for your opponent's three-in-a-line with an open space, and block it.
3. Don't fill the square below a threat
If your opponent needs a space that isn't reachable yet, don't drop a disc right underneath it: you'd let them play there next.
4. Build two threats
Two different threats at once can't both be blocked. Aim for positions where one disc creates two.
5. Odd and even rows
Counting from the bottom, the first player wants threats on odd rows (1, 3, 5), the second on even rows. As columns fill, that usually decides who gets the key square.
6. Keep your discs connected
Discs next to each other make more lines than discs spread around the edges.
7. Use the diagonals
Diagonal threats are easy to miss, for both sides. Look for them on every move.
8. Force your opponent's moves
A threat your opponent must block lets you choose where their next disc goes, sometimes right under a square you need.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best first move?
The centre column. It takes part in more possible lines of four than any other column.
