Hangman Strategy: 7 Tips
1. Vowels first
Almost every word has a vowel. Start with E, then A, O and I. U is less common.
2. Then the common consonants
T, N, S, R, L and D appear in lots of words. Save J, Q, X and Z for later.
3. Use the length
A five-letter word with one vowel shown leaves fewer possibilities than you think. Count the blanks.
4. Look for patterns
Common endings like -ING, -ED, -ER, -LY and -TION, and common starts like ST, TH, CH and SH, are worth testing once a few letters fit.
5. Double letters
If a letter shows up twice, think of words with double letters (LL, SS, EE, OO, TT).
6. Think of real words
Once half the word is showing, stop guessing letters blindly: list real words that fit and pick a letter that tells them apart.
7. In two-player games
Short words with unusual letters (like JAZZ or LYNX) are the hardest to guess.
