Hearts Strategy: 8 Tips to Win More Games
Hearts rewards patience and memory more than luck. These eight habits will lower your score quickly. New to the game? Start with the rules.
1. Pass the dangerous cards
The Q♠, A♠ and K♠ are the cards most likely to cost you 13 points. Pass them, plus high hearts, unless you're well protected (four or more low spades).
2. Make a void
Passing all your cards of one short suit (say, three diamonds) leaves you void. When diamonds are led, you can throw away the Q♠ or a high heart instead.
3. Keep low cards
Low cards (2s, 3s, 4s) are your escape hatches. They let you play under the winning card and let someone else take the trick.
4. Duck: play the highest card that still loses
When following suit, play the highest card below the current winner. You keep your hand flexible and get rid of a card that could win a later trick.
5. Lead spades to flush out the queen
If you don't hold the Q♠, A♠ or K♠, leading low spades forces whoever has the queen to play it, or to keep guarding it with fewer and fewer spades.
6. Don't win a trick you can't afford
If you must win a trick, win it with your highest card of that suit, while it's free of points. Later in the hand, high cards are liabilities.
7. Watch for a moon shot
If one player has taken every point so far, take a heart yourself, even if it costs you a point. One heart stops a 26-point swing.
8. Count the hearts and spades
Keep track of how many hearts have been played and whether the Q♠ is out. When the queen is gone, your A♠ and K♠ are safe.
Play Hearts now and try them out.
Frequently asked questions
Should I pass the Queen of Spades?
Usually, unless you hold four or more other spades below it. With that many spades you can keep it safe and drop it on someone else later.
What are the most dangerous cards in Hearts?
The Q♠, then the A♠ and K♠ (they can be forced to win the trick the queen falls on), then high hearts.
