Knockout Whist Strategy: 6 Tips
Knockout Whist is about staying alive first and controlling trumps second. New here? Read the rules first.
1. One trick first
Until you have a trick, play to win the earliest one you safely can: an ace in a plain suit on the first round of that suit, or a high trump. Saving it for later risks never getting the chance.
2. Choose trumps by length
When you pick trumps, a suit of four small cards usually beats a suit of two aces: length means you keep trumping after the others run out.
3. Lead your winners
Holding the top trump or the last high card of a suit? Lead it. A sure trick now is worth more than hoping it stays good.
4. Keep a trump for the end
In short hands, one trump kept to the last trick often wins it, because everyone else is void by then.
5. Count what's gone
With seven cards each, half the deck is in play. Note which aces and kings have fallen; a queen can be the top card left.
6. Play for the small hands
The one- and two-card hands are nearly coin flips, so try to win the game before them: take most tricks in the middle hands and keep choosing trumps.
Frequently asked questions
What matters most in Knockout Whist?
Survival. One trick keeps you in; everything after that is about controlling the trump choice. Spend your strongest card the moment it guarantees a trick.
