Letter Grid Tips: 5 Ways to Find More

Everyone finds the first ten words. The next twenty come from method. New here? Read the rules first.

1. Start at the awkward letters

A Q, J, X or Z has only a few words that use it. Find those first, while you're fresh, then they stop nagging.

2. Extend every word you find

Found TAR? Check TARS, STAR, STARE, START. Most grids let a word grow by one letter at either end.

3. Hunt the endings

-ED, -ER, -ES, -ING and -EST are the long-word makers. Spot a touching E-D or I-N-G, then trace backwards.

4. Sweep systematically

Take each square as a starting letter in turn and try every neighbour. It's slower than inspiration, but it finds the words inspiration misses.

5. Trust the counter

The counter shows how many words are left. Single digits means the rest are short or odd; take a hint or finish. Dozens left means the grid is rich: keep sweeping.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the long words?

Look for endings first: -ING, -ED, -ER, -EST, -ES. If the grid has them touching, trace backwards from the ending to see what fits in front.
