Liar's Dice Strategy: Odds and Bluffs
Liar's Dice is probability with a poker face. Know the odds, then decide when to ignore them. New here? Read the rules first.
1. A third of the unseen dice
Each die you can't see shows a given face or a one about one time in three. Add that to what's under your cup for the expected count. For bids on ones it's one in six.
2. Bid what you hold
Bidding on a face you have three of is safe and tells the table nothing it can use, since every face you bid could be a bluff.
3. Raise by small steps
Each raise is a claim you may have to back. Going from six 4s to six 5s commits you to little; jumping to nine 4s hands the next player an easy challenge.
4. Read the raises
Players who raise in big steps usually hold the face. Players who switch faces often are hunting for a safe spot. Both tell you where the dice are.
5. Challenge below the odds
When the bid asks for more than the expectation plus a die or two, challenge. Letting it pass only forces you to raise an already shaky claim.
6. Bluff when it's believable
A bluff works when it sits near the expected count. Bid one above what you can see, not five.
Frequently asked questions
How many dice of a face should I expect?
With wild ones, each unseen die matches a given face one time in three. Twenty dice on the table and three 4s under your cup: expect about three plus five, so eight 4s in all. Bids well above the expectation are bluffs.
