Neutron Strategy: 5 Tips

Neutron is a game of lines. Rules first? See how to play.

1. Open your lines

A straight or diagonal run from the neutron to your home row with nothing in the way is a win next turn. Place pieces so that such a run appears after your opponent's forced neutron move.

2. Close theirs

Likewise, make sure no neutron destination lies on your opponent's home row. A piece parked in the right square shortens the slide and saves the game.

3. The piece move is the real move

The neutron move is usually forced to one of a few squares; the piece move is where you create threats. Think about where the neutron will be and which lines you can open or close.

4. Mind the stop

Pieces slide to the end, so a piece you move may stop somewhere unhelpful. Check the exact landing square before committing.

5. Set the trap

A neutron with no exits loses for the player who must move it. Surrounding it, or leaving only exits onto your home row, ends the game at once.

The hard computer searches two full turns ahead, counting winning lines and exits; normal one turn; easy plays at random.

Frequently asked questions

What is the basic idea in Neutron?

After you move the neutron, your piece move shapes where it can go next turn. Use it to open a line from the neutron to your home row while blocking every line to your opponent's.
