Royal Game of Ur Strategy: 6 Tips
Ur is a dice game, but most games are decided by who handles the shared lane better. New here? Read the rules first.
1. Know the odds
Four binary dice: 0 and 4 come up 1 in 16 each, 1 and 3 come up 4 in 16 each, 2 comes up 6 in 16. A piece exactly 2 behind an enemy is the biggest threat.
2. Hold the central rosette
Square 8 is safe, blocks the lane for the opponent and gives a free roll. Get a piece there early and leave it as long as the rest of your game can afford it.
3. Hunt from behind
Enemies in the lane can only be hit by pieces 1 to 4 squares behind them. Keep a chaser in range, ideally 2 behind.
4. Don't rush into the lane
Pieces on squares 1–4 are safe. Move them in when a capture or the rosette is on offer, not just because you can.
5. Bear off when you can
An exact roll to leave is rare (one specific number). Take it when it comes; waiting rarely pays.
6. Chain the rosettes
Entering with a 4 lands on the first rosette and rolls again; from there 4 more reaches the central one. Plan moves that could land on rosettes, since each is a free turn.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the central rosette so important?
It's the only safe square in the shared lane, it blocks the opponent, and it grants an extra roll. A piece parked there is a wall and a springboard at once.
