Rummy Strategy: 6 Tips

Rummy rewards two habits: knowing what the discard pile has told you, and keeping your losses small. New here? Read the rules first.

1. Draw from the discard pile only when it melds

Taking the discard shows everyone what you're collecting, and you can't discard it back. Take it when it completes a meld or extends one; otherwise the stock is the quiet choice.

2. Discard high cards early

Kings and queens cost ten points each if someone goes out. Unless they're part of a pair or a run in the making, shed them first.

3. Watch what the others take

A player who takes the 8♥ is collecting eights or hearts around the 8. Don't feed them: discard that 8♣ later, or never.

4. Lay off everything you can

Each card laid off is points off your hand for free. Check the table every turn before you discard.

5. Hold melds while the table is empty, then race

Early melds give opponents places to lay off. Once someone has melded, or you're close to going out, lay down everything: the hand can end any turn.

6. Two pairs beat one triple in the making

Holding 7-7 and J-J gives you two ways to meld; holding 7-8-9 of one suit and waiting for the 10 is one way. Keep your options wide until the stock gets low.

Frequently asked questions

Should I lay down melds as soon as I have them?

Usually yes: it reduces the points you'd lose if someone goes out. The exception is early in the hand when nobody has melded, because every meld on the table is a place others can lay off their cards.
