Seega Strategy: 5 Tips

Seega is decided by the shape you build before the first move. Rules first? See how to play.

1. Place for the first move

The centre is empty when movement starts, so the first move is almost always into or next to it. As White, make sure that move captures; as Black, make sure it doesn't, and that your reply does.

2. Don't sit between two enemies

A piece with enemies on both sides along a line is safe only while they stay still. Any enemy that steps into line with a friend takes you. Keep your pieces in pairs and corners instead.

3. The centre is a fortress

A piece on the centre square cannot be taken and threatens four directions. Get there first when you can; otherwise keep it empty rather than hand it over.

4. Double threats

Move a piece so it sandwiches enemies in two directions at once: your opponent can save at most one.

5. Mobility in the endgame

With few pieces left, the side that keeps room to move wins the fifty-move count. Don't lock your own pieces in; force the opponent into corners.

The hard computer searches four plies with material and mobility; normal two; easy grabs any capture it sees.

Frequently asked questions

Who has the advantage in Seega?

The first mover after placement usually has the initiative, because the first move often captures. Place your last pieces so that your first move takes something and your opponent's reply cannot.
