Sixteen Solving Tips
Sixteen rewards careful pairs of moves. Rules first? See how to play.
1. Rows from the top
Fill the top row, then the next. Rows already finished should not be shifted again.
2. Column, row, column back
To bring a number into place, slide its column, slide the target row, and slide the column back. The solved rows above stay untouched.
3. Work below the solved part
All the scrambling you need can happen in the rows still unsolved. Keep your shifts there.
4. The last row
The final row needs cycles: shift it, move a column, shift back, move the column back. Each such cycle rearranges a few numbers in the last row.
5. Count moves
Once you can solve a size, try fewer moves. The hint's search often finds shorter routes than a step-by-step method.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move one number without wrecking the rest?
Shift its column so the number reaches the row you are building, shift that row to place it, then shift the column back. Only the unsolved rows below are disturbed.
