Surakarta Strategy: 5 Tips
Surakarta rewards seeing the board as four tracks. Rules first? See how to play.
1. Learn the tracks
Each circuit is a single closed track: two rows and two columns joined by four loops. An enemy anywhere on your circuit, with only empty squares between you along the track, can be taken.
2. Blockers
A piece of either colour on the track stops a capture. Keep a friendly piece between your valuable pieces and any open loop, and move it only when you have checked what it uncovers.
3. The edge is shelter
The first and last rows and columns are not on any circuit. A piece parked there can't be captured, though it also can't capture until it steps inward.
4. Trade when ahead
With more pieces, exchanges simplify toward a won endgame. With fewer, avoid open tracks and aim for the fifty-move draw.
5. Before every step
Ask what the moved piece now threatens along both tracks it may sit on, and what lane it has just opened behind it. Most losses come from stepping out of a blocking square.
The hard computer searches three plies (four with few pieces), counting material and capture threats; normal two; easy takes any capture on offer.
Frequently asked questions
Where is a piece safe in Surakarta?
On the outer edge lines, which belong to no circuit, and anywhere the lanes leading to it along the circuits are blocked by other pieces. A piece on an open circuit line with empty squares between it and an enemy on the same circuit is in danger.
