How to Play Switch Off
Switch Off is a quick logic puzzle on a grid of lights.
The rules
- Press any light. It flips (on to off, or off to on), and so do the lights directly above, below, left and right of it.
- Turn every light off to win.
Two useful facts
- Order doesn't matter. A press always flips the same five lights, so pressing A then B gives the same board as B then A.
- Never press a light twice. The second press undoes the first. A solution is just a set of lights to press, each once.
On kawu
- Sizes: 3×3, 5×5 and 7×7. Every board can be cleared.
- The counter shows your presses. The hint marks a light from a solution with the fewest presses from where you are.
- The daily board is 5×5 and the same for everyone; the result is your number of presses.
Frequently asked questions
Does the order of presses matter?
No. Each press flips the same set of lights whenever it happens, so only which lights you press matters, not when.
Is every board solvable?
Not in general (on a 5×5 board some patterns can't be cleared), but every board on kawu is made by pressing random lights on a dark board, so it can always be cleared.
