Thirty-One Strategy: When to Knock
Thirty-One is about reading the table more than your own cards. New here? Read the rules first.
1. Commit to a suit early
After the deal, pick the suit with the best total and chase only that. Switching suits halfway wastes the turns you've already spent.
2. Knock at the right height
Knocking early with 25–27 often wins the hand, because others haven't built yet. The longer the hand runs, the higher the bar: by the third round of turns, 27–29 is the knocking zone.
3. Read the discards
What a player takes from the pile tells you their suit; what they throw tells you what they don't need. A player taking hearts twice is probably sitting on 25+.
4. Don't feed the taker
If the player on your left is collecting spades, don't discard a spade unless you have no choice. Feeding a suit to the next player is the most common losing mistake.
5. The ace matters
An ace is 11, the best single card. Holding an ace in your suit turns two tens into 31. Don't discard an ace of your suit for a face card.
6. On your last life, play tight
With one life left, being lowest ends your game. Knock only when very safe, take fewer risks on which suit to chase, and remember that someone else knocking forces a showdown you might not want.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good hand to knock on?
Early in a hand, 25 or more is usually enough to avoid being lowest among four players. Late in a hand, when others have had many turns, wait for 27 or better.
