Word Ladder Tips: 5 Ways to Climb Faster
A ladder is a path through the dictionary. These habits find it faster. New here? Read the rules first.
1. Count the letters that match
Letters already matching the target are done: don't change them. Each remaining letter needs at least one step, so a word three letters away is at least three steps.
2. Work from both ends
Think of words one step from the target as well as one step from the start. Meeting in the middle halves the search.
3. Vowels first
Changing a vowel keeps the consonant frame, and most frames allow several vowels: B_LL gives BALL, BELL, BILL, BULL. Swapping vowels is the easiest way to move.
4. Head for common patterns
Words like STARE, SHARE, SPARE and SCARE are hubs with many neighbours. Routes through hubs are short; routes through odd words dead-end.
5. Undo is free
A wrong turn costs nothing but a click. Try a word, look at what it opens up, and back out if the target got no closer.
Frequently asked questions
What's the best first move in a Word Ladder?
Fix a letter that's already in the right place in the target and never touch it again. Then change one of the others, usually a vowel, towards the target.
