How to play

  1. The Alquerque board: 5×5 points joined by rows, columns and the diagonals of alternate squares.
  2. Four tigers start in the corners; the goat player holds twenty goats and moves first.
  3. Goats are placed one per turn on empty points; once all twenty are down they move along lines to adjacent empty points.
  4. A tiger steps to an adjacent empty point or jumps an adjacent goat to the empty point beyond, capturing it. Jumping is optional, one per turn.
  5. Tigers win by capturing five goats; goats win when no tiger can move.
