Breakthrough Strategy: 6 Tips

1. Defend the back row

An enemy on your second row wins next move unless a back-row piece can capture it. Keep defenders home on the files where enemies could arrive.

2. Advance in pairs

Two pieces side by side protect each other's diagonal squares. A lone piece far ahead usually dies.

3. Count the race

Breakthrough is often a race: if your runner reaches home one move before theirs, you win. Count moves before you commit.

4. The fork

A piece that attacks two enemies at once (one on each diagonal) usually wins one of them. Look for squares that fork.

5. Trade when ahead

With more pieces, swapping one for one brings you closer to a breakthrough. With fewer, avoid trades.

6. Don't open holes

Every piece you move leaves a square behind it unguarded. Ask what could land there.

Frequently asked questions

Should I keep pieces on my back row in Breakthrough?

Yes. A back-row piece is your last defender: an enemy piece that reaches your second row can only be stopped by a piece beside it on the back row. Keep a few back until the race is decided.
