Edge Match Solving Tips

Edge Match is about scarcity: the fewer tiles that carry a number, the fewer places they can go. New here? Read the rules first.

1. Rare numbers first

Count how often each number appears on right sides and on left sides. A number that appears once on each must join those two tiles. The same goes for tops and bottoms.

2. Build from a corner

Pick a tile with two rare numbers on adjacent sides and put it in a corner facing inward. Grow from there; each placed tile fixes the numbers its neighbours need.

3. The border is free

Numbers on the outer border of the grid don't have to match anything. A tile whose number has no partner anywhere must sit on the edge with that side outward.

4. Match pairs before placing

Find tiles that fit together first, then look for where the pair fits. Pairs with a rare shared number are almost always right.

5. Swap, don't clear

When a tile is in the wrong place, swap it with the tile that belongs there rather than returning it to the tray. You keep more information on the board.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start an Edge Match puzzle?

With a number that appears only once on a right side and once on a left side (or top and bottom): those two tiles must be neighbours. Chain such pairs and the grid assembles itself.
