Konane Strategy: Mobility Wins
Konane is not about capturing the most stones. It's about having a jump left when your opponent doesn't. New here? Read the rules first.
1. Count jumps, not stones
Before each move, count the jumps each side has. A capture that leaves you with three options and your opponent with one is better than a double jump that evens the count.
2. Don't open lines for them
Every stone you remove creates an empty square the opponent may land in. Check what jumps your capture creates for them before you take it.
3. Keep stones in protected pairs
Two of your stones side by side can't be jumped along that line, since the landing square is occupied. Spread your stones so each has a neighbour on the lines the opponent could use.
4. Save multi-jumps
A long jump is a reserve: a move you can make later when options run short. Don't spend it while you still have quiet single jumps.
5. Count the endgame
With few stones left, the game is pure counting: who has more moves in the regions that remain? Trade down into regions where you have the last jump.
Frequently asked questions
What matters most in Konane?
Mobility. The side with more jumps available can afford to wait; the side with fewer is forced into captures that open the board for the opponent. Count both sides' jumps before every move.
