Lasca Strategy: 5 Tips
Lasca rewards patience. Rules first? See how to play.
1. Prisoners are power
Every capture adds a prisoner to your column. A tall column controlled by you is several enemy pieces out of play, so capture with the same column when you can.
2. Guard the tall ones
If your tall column gets jumped, the enemy takes only its top piece, but that uncovers your prisoner, who becomes the enemy's again, with your pieces now under it. Keep tall columns off the enemy's diagonals.
3. Free your own
A column topped by an enemy piece with your pieces underneath is a target: capture its top and your pieces are back in play immediately.
4. Officers first
An officer moves and captures backwards, which makes it the only piece that can chase. Get one early, and remember that promotion ends the move, so plan the approach.
5. Count control, not columns
The side to move with no legal move loses, so mobility matters, but the real score is pieces under your control. The hard computer values a controlled friendly piece at full weight and a buried enemy prisoner at half.
Frequently asked questions
How is Lasca different from checkers strategically?
Material is never gone. A tall column of your prisoners is a liability if it gets jumped, because the enemy regains its top piece and later the ones below. Count the pieces each side controls, not how many are left.
