Mini Shogi Strategy: 5 Tips

Mini Shogi is sharp: with twelve pieces and a tiny board, the first mistake usually decides. Rules first? See how to play.

1. The big pieces rule

The rook and bishop are worth more than everything else combined. Trade them only for each other, and keep them safe from drops behind them.

2. Drop behind the lines

A piece in hand can appear anywhere. Drops next to the enemy king, especially a gold or silver backed by your rook, are the main way to attack.

3. Gold at the king's side

The gold's six-way step makes it the best defender. Keep it adjacent to your king and avoid moving it away for a capture that leaves the king bare.

4. Count hands, not just boards

Before a trade, compare what each side will hold afterwards. A capture that hands your opponent a rook to drop is rarely worth a silver.

5. Mind the pawn

One pawn each, but it promotes to gold on the far rank, and a promoted pawn is cheap to lose and strong to keep. Remember it can never be dropped to mate.

The hard computer searches three plies over moves and drops, counting material on the board and in hand; normal two; easy plays at random.

Frequently asked questions

What is different about tactics with drops?

Material never leaves the game. A captured rook comes back for the capturer, often dropped straight behind your king. Every exchange therefore changes who holds the attacking pieces, not how many are on the board.
