Three felt circles become a six-petal flower when small cuts are rounded toward the centre. The pin is sewn to the backing circle before that circle is sewn all around to the flower, keeping every join accessible and secure.

A first look
Cut three 2.5 inch felt circles and one 1.5 inch backing circle. On two flower circles, mark six evenly spaced points around the edge. Keep the marks light because they will be hidden by the petal cuts.
About 8 minOn the two marked circles, cut from the outside edge toward the centre, stopping 1/2 inch before the middle at each mark. Round each new petal tip with the scissors so no sharp corner remains. Leave the third circle uncut as the stable middle layer.
About 9 minPlace the uncut circle at the bottom, one cut circle above it, and the second cut circle on top with its petals staggered. Rotate the top layer until the gaps in one layer are covered by petals in the next.
About 7 minCut about 18 inches of the embroidery floss and separate two strands. Thread the needle and knot one end. Keep the remaining floss aside for sewing the backing and pin.
About 7 minPlace the uncut circle underneath, one cut circle above it, and the second cut circle on top with its rounded petals staggered. Make five small passes through all three layers at the centre. Bring the needle up beside the bead, pass through its 2 mm hole, and return through the felt before securing the thread underneath.
About 15 minBefore joining the backing to the flower, centre the brooch pin on the 1.5 inch backing circle with its clasp facing outward. Stitch through its flat sewing bar four times, knotting on the felt side, then test the clasp.
About 10 minPlace the prepared backing circle over the underside of the flower and whipstitch all the way around its edge, catching the uncut bottom flower layer. Keep every stitch inside the backing circle, then tuck the final tail under two nearby stitches.
