How to Play Signpost
Signpost is a chain puzzle: every square tells you which way to look for its successor, and you work out the order.
The rules
- Each square shows an arrow in one of eight directions. One square has no arrow: it is the end of the chain.
- Number the squares 1 to n². For every number except the last, the next number must lie along the arrow, in a straight line, any distance away.
- Some numbers are given, always including 1 and n². Every puzzle has exactly one chain.
Playing on kawu
Tap a square and type its number, or pick one from the pad under the grid. Links are drawn between consecutive numbers that follow their arrows; a number shown in red breaks the rule with its neighbour in the chain. Sizes 4×4, 5×5 and 6×6; the daily puzzle is 5×5 and timed. Hint fixes a wrong entry first, then adds the next number.

Frequently asked questions
Does the next number have to be in the adjacent square?
No. It can be any distance away, as long as it lies in a straight line in the direction of the arrow. That is what makes Signpost different from path puzzles where numbers touch.
Which square is the last one?
The square without an arrow (drawn with a dashed ring). It holds n², and nothing follows it.
