Signpost Solving Tips
Signpost rewards looking backwards as much as forwards. Rules first? See how to play.
1. Single entries
Find a square that only one arrow points at. Its predecessor is that arrow's square, so the two squares are consecutive, whatever their numbers turn out to be.
2. Single exits
An arrow that points at exactly one empty square fixes its successor just as firmly. Corners and edges often have only one or two squares in range.
3. Grow from both ends
Start at 1 and walk forward while the arrow leaves one choice; start at n² and walk backward through squares with one incoming arrow. The chains meet in the middle.
4. Count the gap
Two given numbers k and m need exactly m − k − 1 squares between them. If a candidate route is too short or too long, it is wrong.
5. Chains without numbers
You can link squares before you know their numbers. Once a linked run touches a given number, the whole run gets numbered at once. On kawu, type any number of a run to see which links hold.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I start a Signpost puzzle?
At squares with a single entry: if only one arrow in the grid points at a square, the number before that square is fixed. Chase those forced links from 1 and backwards from n², then use the given numbers to join the pieces.
