Sueca Strategy: 5 Tips

Sueca is won by points, not tricks. Rules first? See how to play.

1. Count the bisca

The eight aces and sevens carry 84 points. Know which have gone, which your side holds, and which are still out; the rest of the deck is small change.

2. Feed your partner

When your partner is winning the trick and you are last to play, give them a king, jack or queen rather than a worthless card. Points go to the team, not the player.

3. Lead low to flush high

A low lead in a long suit forces the opponents to spend aces and sevens or lose the trick cheaply. Keep your own big cards for tricks you can win.

4. Trump with purpose

There is no obligation to trump, so save trumps for tricks worth ten or more points and for the end, when they are the only winners left.

5. Watch the voids

A player who fails to follow suit is void: they can trump that suit later. Lead it again only when you want to tempt a trump out of them.

The hard computer samples the hidden hands and plays each candidate out to the end of the hand; normal plays sound single-trick tactics; easy plays a random legal card a third of the time.

Frequently asked questions

What should I lead in Sueca?

Usually a low card from a long plain suit, to draw out the opponents' high cards while your partner's aces and sevens stay safe. Lead an ace once the suit has gone round and the trumps are thinner.
