Train Tracks Solving Tips
Tracks is solved by counting and by the shape of a path. Rules first? See how to play.
1. Zeros and fulls
A count of 0 blanks the whole row or column; a count equal to the size fills it. Mark these first.
2. Follow the ends
The entrance and exit cells each have exactly one track neighbour inside the grid. Where only one neighbour is possible, lay it.
3. No touching
Once a track cell has its two connections, every other neighbour must be blank. Mark those crosses: they often complete a count.
4. Count what is left
Compare each count with the track already laid. If a row still needs two cells and only two candidates remain, both are track.
5. Keep the exit free
The track must reach the exit last. A route that would arrive at the exit with cells still owed to some row or column cannot be right.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I start a Train Tracks puzzle?
At the extremes: a row with count 0 is all blank, a row with the full count is all track. Then extend from the entrance and exit, where the track has only one way to go.
