Gin Rummy Strategy: 8 Tips to Win More Hands
These tips assume you know the rules. They're ordered roughly from beginner to intermediate.
1. Throw high deadwood early
A lone King costs 10 points if your opponent knocks; a lone 2 costs 2. In the first few turns, throw unconnected face cards and keep the low cards. Low deadwood lets you knock sooner and limits the damage of an opponent's knock.
2. Keep flexible combinations
Two cards that could become a meld in several ways are worth keeping:
- 7♥ 8♥ can become a run with a 6♥ or a 9♥.
- 7♥ 7♠ can become a set with either of two other 7s.
- 7♥ 8♥ 7♠ connects both ways and is worth more than either pair alone.
A gapped pair like 7♥ 9♥ needs exactly one card, so it's weaker.
3. Don't telegraph your melds
Picking up from the discard pile shows your opponent what you're collecting. Take a card from the pile only when it completes a meld or clearly improves your hand; otherwise draw from the stock.
4. Watch what your opponent takes
If your opponent picks up the 8♣, they probably have 8s or 7♣/9♣. Avoid throwing cards that fit that: other 8s, the 6♣, 7♣, 9♣ and 10♣.
5. Discard what your opponent threw
Cards of the same rank as your opponent's discards, or next to them in suit, are usually safe. If they threw the J♦, the J♠ is less likely to help them.
6. Knock early, gin late
Early in a hand your opponent's deadwood is high, so a knock with 8 or 9 still scores well. Later in the hand they've improved, and knocking with high deadwood risks an undercut. See when to knock.
7. Count layoffs before knocking
If your melds are easy to add to (open-ended runs, sets of three) and your opponent has picked up nearby cards, they may lay off a lot. Prefer knocking with closed melds, or wait one more turn.
8. Mind the match score
Near 100, the shape of the game changes:
- You need a few points: knock as soon as you safely can.
- Your opponent needs a few points: take more risks to win this hand, including going for gin.
- A shutout is on the line: winning a single hand avoids a doubled game bonus.
Practise on kawu
- Easy knocks the moment it can and sometimes throws the wrong card.
- Normal discards to keep its deadwood lowest, avoids feeding you, and knocks early.
- Hard also estimates your hand from what you've picked up and thrown away before deciding whether to knock.
Turn on Arrange by melds to see your best melds and deadwood at every moment. The Hint button shows what the normal computer would do.
Frequently asked questions
Should I pick up from the discard pile?
Only when the card completes or clearly improves a meld. Picking up tells your opponent what you're collecting; drawing from the stock keeps them guessing.
Which cards should I throw first?
High, unconnected cards: Kings, Queens and Jacks that aren't part of a meld or a two-card start.
