How to Play Tute
Tute is Spain's great two-handed trump game: a cousin of Briscola in its first half and a strict game of following suit in its second.
The rules
- The deck has 40 cards: ace, 2 to 7, jack, queen and king in each suit. Card rank from high to low: ace, three, king, queen, jack, 7, 6, 5, 4, 2.
- Each player gets eight cards. The next card is turned face up to name the trump and slides under the remaining stock, to be drawn last.
- While the stock lasts you may play any card. A trick is won by the higher card of the suit led, or by a trump if one was played against a plain lead. The winner draws first, then the loser, and the winner leads.
- When the stock is gone you must follow suit and beat the led card if you can. Void in the suit, you must trump; if trump was led you must play a higher trump when able. Only with nothing of either may you discard.
- Points: ace 11, three 10, king 4, queen 3, jack 2 (120 in the deck), plus 10 for the last trick.
- Declarations: winning a trick while holding the king and queen of one suit scores 40 in trump or 20 in another suit, once per suit. Holding four kings or four queens when you win a trick is a tute and wins the game at once.
- The player with the higher total wins; equal totals are a draw.
Playing on kawu
Tap a card to play it; cards you may not play are dimmed in the second half. Your hand shows trumps on the right. The panel shows the stock, the trump card, both scores and the latest declaration. Hint suggests what the hard computer would play. There is no undo, since the opponent's cards are hidden.
Next: Tute strategy.
Frequently asked questions
How do declarations work?
When you win a trick while holding both the king and the queen of one suit, you declare them: 40 points if it is the trump suit, 20 otherwise. Each suit can be declared once. On kawu declarations happen automatically as soon as you win a trick holding the pair.
Can I swap the trump seven for the turned-up card?
Not in this version. The exchange of the trump seven, allowed in some Spanish rules, is left out to keep the game simple.
