Tute Strategy: 5 Tips
Tute is two games in one. Rules first? See how to play.
1. Protect your pairs
A king and queen of one suit in hand are worth 20, or 40 in trump, as soon as you win a trick. Avoid playing either card until you have declared.
2. Win a trick to declare
You can only declare after taking a trick, so when you hold a pair, take any cheap trick you can: a low card of the suit led is enough.
3. Lead low, keep aces and threes
In the first half there is no obligation to follow, so a led ace can be trumped. Lead worthless cards, let the computer spend its high cards, and keep your aces and threes for tricks you can win.
4. Trumps are for the second half
Once the stock is empty you must follow and beat, and trumps decide everything. Enter the second half with more and higher trumps than your opponent.
5. Count to the last trick
Ten points for the last trick often decides a close game. Count the points taken and the cards still out; the hard computer plays the last five tricks out exactly, so bring a lead in points into it.
Frequently asked questions
Should I play a king or queen if it would break a pair?
Rarely in the first half. A declaration is worth 20 or 40, more than most tricks. Win a cheap trick first, declare, and only then spend those cards.
