How to Play Twiddle

Twiddle is a turning puzzle: every move spins four numbers round, and the art is fixing some without undoing others.

The rules

  1. The numbers 1 to n² are scrambled on a 3×3, 4×4 or 5×5 grid.
  2. A move turns any 2×2 block a quarter turn, clockwise or anticlockwise.
  3. Put the numbers back in reading order: 1 at the top left, then along each row, with n² at the bottom right.

Playing on kawu

Each round dot sits where four squares meet; tap it to turn that block. Choose clockwise or anticlockwise with the buttons above the grid. Squares holding the right number turn green. Hint searches for a short way home and shows its first turn. Undo is allowed. The daily puzzle is 4×4 and timed.

Frequently asked questions

Can every Twiddle puzzle be solved?

Yes. Each puzzle is made by scrambling the solved grid with random turns, so turning them back always works, and there are usually much shorter routes.

Does the orientation of the numbers matter?

No. Only the positions count. A 6 never turns into a 9 here.
