Twiddle Solving Tips
Twiddle yields to a method. Rules first? See how to play.
1. Top row first
Bring 1, 2, 3 and so on into the top row one at a time. A number can travel anywhere by turning the blocks along its path.
2. Protect what is solved
Once a square is right, avoid turning any block that contains it. Work below and to the right of the solved part.
3. Turn there and back
A clockwise turn followed later by an anticlockwise turn of the same block is a useful pair: in between, a neighbouring turn can slip a number into place.
4. The last two rows together
When only two rows remain, solve them as pairs of columns from the left, so each step only disturbs the unsolved columns to the right.
5. Fewer moves, better score
The move count stays on the board. Once you can solve a size, try to finish it in fewer turns; the hint's search often finds shortcuts.
Frequently asked questions
What is the usual method for Twiddle?
Solve row by row from the top, then the last two rows column by column from the left, keeping already-solved squares out of the blocks you turn.
